It's kind of easy to forget now, but Dwight Yoakam may have been the act most responsible for legitimating country music in the eyes of a lot 20somethings back in the mid 80s (there were other "new traditionalists" like Lyle Lovett, KD Lang, Steve Earle, etc, but I still think Dwight had the biggest impact). He's been lying low for the last couple of years, but he is back on Warner Brothers Records with a new cd slated for early 2012. So I figured it's a good time to remind people of Mr. Yoakam's music - the compilation is a mix of album tracks, rarities, and of course, a couple of duets. Side B (hey, my first encounter with Dwight was a Hillbilly Deluxe cassette my friend made me in 1987) is next week.

What you describe is exactly what happened to me in the 1980s. In the back of my mind I kind of liked bluegrass, but I wasn't turned onto country until I heard Dwight's debut album, which I found through the LA alternative rock scene.

It wasn't long before I found Cash, Hank, Patsy, George, Merle, etc., etc.

Dwight and Flaco's take on Warren Zevon's, "Carmelita", is definitive.

love this, thank you... i too stumbled upon dwight thanks to the LA music scene too, particularly the blasters and los lobos, whom i saw dwight open for. love his version of "long white cadillac."

I think I discovered Patsy a little before Dwight, but Dwight was still really key.

I actually hadn't listened to Carmelita in quite some time, so it was nice to listen again when making the comp. Reminds me how underrated a duet singer he is.

Quite welcome. I wasn't a big fan of his version of Long White Cadillac, but I should go back and listen to it again (it's been a while).

This file is actually the Fine and Malo one rather than Side A of Dwight...any chance of a re-up please? Thanks

Sorry about that. The Dwight Side A is now re-upped and where it should be.
